Some common issues equestrians have

- kyphosis posture - rounded, slouched shoulders - overly long, tight, yet weak upper back and neck muscles, with shortened/tight chest, front of neck muscles. This is often not only a muscle, posture and alignment issue, but an emotional issue as well. Fear, anxiety, worry, frustration often causes you to adopt a rounded shoulder position.
- Fears, worries, concerns that cause your body to stiffen, tighten and overly grip.
- Frustration with yourself and your horse when things are not going well, or you can't get your horse to do what is required at the time.
- poor sitting position in the saddle, and not having an independent seat (you need the reins and stirrups to support and balance you).
- a lack of body control causing parts of body to go out of alignment, and not do what you need them to do.
- Poor balance and coordination - its very hard for your to ride bareback, or with out stirrups (never mind managing extended periods of time doing rising trot bare back or with out stirrups).
- Frustration over disappointments or set backs.
- Competition or performance nerves.
- Not being able to perform a task or movement asked by your instructor. for example; it causes pain, you are too stiff, you don't have the strength or balance, you lack confidence in your ability to do what is asked etc.
- You don't have a lot of body awareness, so you are unconsciously and inadvertently giving "aids" to your horse when you don't even know that you are doing it. This confuses the horse, and "dulls" responsiveness to actual aids you are applying.
- Being too hard on and blaming when you make a mistake.
- Impatience when your horse won't do what you want.
- Poor time management skills.
- Fear is often something your mind ends up focusing on, and then what you fear ends up happening because you have put so much attention into it. Before you even realize it, your mind and body have responded to your feelings, and so has your horse. A couple of examples of this scenario include; fear of your horse playing up, which then causes your horse to play up. Fear of falling off, then your horse suddenly shies, and you fall. Fear of your horse refusing a jump, then your horse refuses. Fear of your horse picking up the wrong canter lead (especially at a competition), and then they not only pick up the wrong lead, but then throw in a disunited canter as the icing on the cake.
- Loss of feeling, tingling, pins and needles or numbness sensation in the pelvic area caused by compression of the lower spinal cord and nerves. If untreated, may lead to coordination and balance problems, nerve damage, and other intimate issues.
- Collapsing and bouncing in the saddle, loosing control over legs, leaning forward.
- Not being able to mount your horse from the ground due to lack of flexibility, strength, stiffness or pain.
- Finding it difficult to think of solutions to problems and challenges.
- Getting "left behind", this feels like the horse is running out from underneath you.
- Sadness, depression, grief over a loss. This is not just about death, it also includes things such as; loosing at a competition you really wanted to do well in, your horse sustains an injury and takes time to recover, your horse becomes unwell and needs constant care over time, you and your horse haven't got the relationship you desire and you don't know how to change or fix it, your horse refused to get on the float when you really wanted to go on an outing of any description, you are unable to ride due to an illness or injury of your own.
- Fear of failure and/or success.
- Getting tired easily when needing to ride "correct" for an extended periods of time.
- You hold your breath, or just don't breath very effectively.
- Riding posture and position problems and bad habits. Eg flat hands, leaning forward, lack of control over lower leg, heals coming up, poor seat positioning, loosing your feet from the stirrups, hands coming up etc etc.
- "Lost your nerve" for example; due to an accident, you have not ridden in a long time etc.
- Injuries, pain, discomfort holding you back
